Because it doesn’t matter that he saved Harry because of his guilt over getting his mom killed. And here is why.

Okay, understatement here. It isn’t like James cut him in line once. He publicly humiliated him. He bullied him, quite viciously. Lupin and Sirius cop to it. Harry is disgusted by it. You can’t just act like “oh, Snape is blowing shit way out of proportion.” He doesn’t have to like him. Liking Harry is definitely not in his job description. He protects him on NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. Not like, he drove him to school once. He’s definitely saved his life a shit ton.

Okay, Snape is creepy. He was also a socially inept kid who comes from an abusive household with next to no support. 

You can go on all you want about how he had a bad childhood. Remus Lupin had an awful childhood

Wait. Wait. Wait. Their childhoods aren’t comparable. Lupin always had an extensive support system. Don’t get me wrong, being a werewolf sucks dick. Not saying it doesn’t. I’m saying that he had things that Snape never really had. Loving parents, friends, etc. He had the luxury of being kind. If during your formative years, you are taught that shouting and arguing are the most effective forms of social interaction, you probs aren’t going to be the kindest person in the world.

He was a foul and miserable creature and nothing he did ever redeemed the wrongs he committed, because no matter how you dress up a pile of shit, it is still, in fact, a pile of shit.

So while it is true that Snape did some things that helped out quite a bit, he did it all for selfish reasons and the only thing he was ever sorry for was getting the girl he was obsessed with killed—oh, and calling her a horrible racial slur, which he very much meant at the time. Never mind the death of her husband or orphaning of her child.

So, here’s where we reach an impasse: “Everything he ever did he did for selfish reasons and therefore it totes doesn’t count.” Once again, don’t misunderstand. Snape did a lot of horrible shit. HE ALSO REPEATEDLY RISKS HIS LIFE IN ORDER TO SAVE HARRY AND OTHERS. HE ALSO KINDA SORTA IS ESSENTIAL TO VOLDEMORT’S FUCKING DOWNFALL. 

You know what, I’d probably be cool with your hatred of Snape if you hated Dumbledore as much. Remember that whole part when Dumbledore brings a yound sociopathic Tom Riddle his letter to Hogwarts? And that part where he neglected his younger mentally ill sister in favor of his evil lover? Do you turn around and say “welp, then everything that he ever did was selfish, so he’s a piece of shit”? (If you do, then please summarily ignore this part) No? I think we call that a double standard. Because maybe it’s just me, but setting THE TWO GREATEST DARK WIZARDS EVER LOOSE ON HUMANITY AND THEN GROOMING A CHILD SINCE AGE TWELVE FOR THE DAY THAT HE WOULD DIE, IN ORDER TO SOLVE A PROBLEM THAT HE STARTED is more than a little messed up. 

tl;dr Severus Snape is definitely dickish, but let’s not act like he has zero redeeming qualities. Or that it’s inconceivable that anyone could sympathize with him. Plus the double standard for Dumbledore is a load of horse shit.

• He brewed the Wolfsbane potion under Dumbledore’s orders. Just as he protected Harry under Dumbledore’s orders. I’m sure he would have had no qualms with poisoning the guy if he could’ve gotten away with it.
• I was talking specifically about the incident with Sirius’s prank, which Remus had absolutely nothing to do with and would never have wanted any part in. He never caused any direct harm to Snape. The fact that Snape just made wild assumptions and decided to be petty and get the man fired is entirely his fault.
• Yes, I am aware. And Harry was upset by this, so he talked to Lupin about it, who told him that Snape was also guilty of doing some pretty nasty shit. There was never a point at which Snape was JUST a victim. And they make it very clear that the reason why James Potter didn’t like Snape was because Snape had an interest in the Dark Arts, and to James that was 100% not cool.
• I didn’t say he had to like Harry to save his life, but he definitely wasn’t helping the kid out of the kindness of his heart. There’s nothing noble about it.
• Snape also grew up with a kind and understanding friend who provided him with support and affection until he publicly shamed her.
• There is a strong parallel between the two of them, and this is why: Snape grew up in a family where he was deemed useless, but Lupin, from the age of seven and on, was raised in a society that called him a monster. And there was a very small group of people who were willing to say otherwise, but otherwise he didn’t have much going for him. He had to keep his condition a secret, since, as shown, having it revealed caused people to not be too happy to have him around. Did Snape’s unfortunate childhood ever prevent him from getting a job? No, but he sure as shit made it so a good man lost the only employment he could find. And I can also say, from real-life experience, that I have known plenty of people who come from really immensely shitty backgrounds but are still all the more kind and compassionate for it.
• I try to ignore the things Dumbledore does because he’s a manipulative dick and if I think too hard about his fuckery it just gives me a headache. I don’t agree with his methods. But I will give him credit for how he treats the people around him when he ISN’T being manipulative: with respect and care. Which is more than could ever be said for Snape. So yes, Dumbledore did some awful things. He may have killed his sister. He signed Harry’s death sentence for him without bothering to tell the kid about it. He thirsted for power and paid for it for the rest of his life. But he also gave people second chances even when they didn’t seem to deserve them—like, for instance, your friend Snape. And he protected the Potters when he found out Voldemort was after them. And he was aware that what he was doing to Harry was really shitty. I’m not saying he was innocent of anything. But he attempted to make up for the horrible, horrible things he did, and even if he wasn’t wholly successful, and even if it wasn’t nearly enough to break even, it’s more than Snape ever bothered to do.
• So in case you got lost in that wall of text: I don’t like Dumbledore either. But I could never hate him as much as I hate that bag of dicks known as Severus Snape.
• And I still don’t think he has any redeeming qualities.
